Art Journal & Scrapbook elements!

Hurricane Irene was a gal with some major mood swings. Her effects on the east coast ranged from mild to devastating. It was predicted that our area would be wrecked...so much so that even my friends in England and Australia caught the word and were praying for our safety. A lot of people in our neck of the woods evacuated but we stuck around, hoping that the hype would turn out to be hype. We were lucky. Irene wasn't all that bad to us. Aaron even walked the little pups twice during the early stages of the storm. We were prepared though, candles...tons of snacks... orders to work on and some fun new projects to keep us busy...we were just really hoping for the power to stay on because doing artwork by candlelight just isn't possible. Turns out, the power outage didn't happen til we were in bed anyway...and it was back on by the time we got up. And when we looked outside after Irene departed we were thrilled to see that our neighborhood was pretty free of damage. The Asbury Park boardwalk and neighboring towns weren't as lucky.

Anyway, what we worked on during the storm were these super cute pages of original artwork...ready made for your Art Journal or Scrapbook. They're actually stickers! And we did them in black & white so that you can fill them in with whatever colors you wish and use whatever medium you please...paint, markers, etc...The page you see here features Allie & Amy...a flag banner...roses...a vintage bunny...cupcake...a cake...and an adorable lace scallop. It's in the shop now! We are so psyched about them and we can't wait to see how everyone customizes them and uses them in their layouts, and spreads ! (We'd love to see pics!)

We are already at work on sheets 2, 3 and 4...so stay tuned! :) If you'd like to add some Everyday is a Holiday elements to your art journal or scrapbook, pop over to the shop to pick up your very own!

I guess that's it for now. Aaron and I send lots of love to all of you who emailed and messaged us on facebook about staying safe. Your prayers must have worked! :) Thanks again for stopping by today! xoxo, Jenny

Wild weekend..

A friends boat birthday party friday
 18 holes on saturday
Rode out to the beach on sunday
The ride to the ocean was gnarly. We sent out all our surf stuff with friends who were driving out the day before. We left portland at 6:30 am , It was cold and dark. We thought we had dressed warm enough but we were so wrong. it's been so nice lately we thought the beach would be the same but it got colder as we got closer. We stopped and got coffee for an hour and got warm. The road was pretty bumpy the whole way too. We had to wait in line for 40 min to get to the beach and when we got there the waves were not so good. We hung out for a bit then realized we had 3 hours of cold ,dark riding to do so we left. The ride home was a test of endurance for sure, I wanted to camp on the side of the road a few times.

Hurricane Irene

Stix n Brix
Clayton, NC

It’s been a very windy and rainy day.  It had started around midnight and it is now 7:00pm and the wind and rain is just now starting to die down.  I’ve walked around outside and it looks like our shingles are fine.  A neighbor who left town early this morning asked me to check on his house.  He has a big limb broken off from one of his Bradford Pear Trees (they are known for that) but his house is fine.

I must admit that it has been nice to be in a solid brick house instead of our MH.  We’ve been in the MH during a nor’easter and the sound of the constant wind is very annoying.  We hardly heard the wind blowing in the house.  We only have one big tree in our yard down near the pond.  It’s a 50’ oak with most of it’s limbs on one side.  With all the rain and wind blowing against it, it is leaning towards the side with the limbs.  That’s over the pond so if it were to fall, it would make a big splash and scare the poop out of some fish.  It has about a 10 degree tilt and the roots have just about come out of the ground causing a mound in the lawn that may need tending to.  I don’t know how long it will last.  Do I leave it as is and hope that someone will hurry up and buy this house?  I don’t want to cut it down but it is definitely weakened.  I guess we need to contact a “tree guy”.

We’re doing fine, but I sure have been thinking about the folks that are in Irene’s path.  We are about 100 miles inland so I’m hoping this is the last one that we have to endure.

Thanks for dropping by, and enjoy each day of your life’s journey by finding beauty in the ordinary.

Funky Friday Feature: Southern Lovely

Hello Funky Polkadot Giraffe readers! I'm Lindsay, from Southern Lovely, and I am so honored to be guest blogging today on Kyla's fabulous blog!

I am a very busy mom of three young children--5 years, 3 years & 5 months. But whenever I get a free minute to myself, I love to create. It's really therapy to me. :)

If you check out my blog, you'll find some inexpensive ways to decorate your house. Here's one of my favorites--

DIY storage bins

We needed more storage in our baby boy's room, but had to be creative where to put it. Right under the crib became the perfect place for something, just had to figure out what to use. I looked at different bins to purchase, but they all seemed a bit much, especially when buying multiple ones. I figured I could surely make something less expensive, and I that's just what I did.

Started with three $1 buckets from the Dollar Tree

Spray painted them--you have to do multiple coats to get it just right. There is a spray paint for plastic, which I tried, I just didn't love the color (there's not much selection). I ended up using my favorite green--Valspar New Avocado.

Add some fabric--found mine at Walmart.

I started by gluing the outer brim of the bucket with the fabric, then worked my way in. It took a lot of glue & cutting to get it to look pretty good. I cut a circle piece for the center of the bucket, then glued it down. It helped to make everything look smooth & more complete.

Lastly, added the vinyl numbers to each bucket, because I just love labeling things. :)

I am really happy with how these little inexpensive buckets turned out!

And here are just a few others that you might enjoy--

Board & Batten

Thrift-store box

Lima bean wreath

Yellow dresser makeover

Thanks for having me Kyla! I hope some of your lovely readers will hop on over to my blog sometime!

Welcome to Mommy School: A Bad Case of Stripes

Welcome back to Welcome to Mommy School!!!

Did you see I made a cute little banner??

I also made a cute little button if you want to share the

awesomeness that is Welcome to Mommy School with your friends :)

My wonderful friend Jenni said I should have a linky

party each month where you all share fun things

you've done with your kids.

I think that's a RAD idea, so stay tuned . . .

Last week we had some fun with Diary of a Worm.

This week I picked another favorite of mine - A Bad Case of Stripes.

This book is perfect for the beginning of a new school year,

because it reminds us to BE OURSELVES!!!

In this day of cyber bullying, peer pressure, and

relational aggression , kids have so much pressure

to be like everyone else or risk being teased.

A Bad Case of Stripes helps us see outwardly,

what can happen inwardly, when we aren't true to ourselves

and what believe in and stand for.

I think it's an awesome tool for kids, because it makes

feelings concrete and visible.

We made Be Yourself! posters

and they are easy peasy lemon squeezy!

I printed out THIS body shape that I found at First Palette.

It was made for a flip book, so I traced it onto cardstock,

so it would be sturdy and I'd lose the flip book lines.

Then the kids decorated their bodies with things they love

that make them unique and who they are.

I cut out the bodies and mounted them onto another

piece of cardstock that I had decorated with colorful stripes.

We even wore some stripes of our own :)

And had some striped Jell-O!

Other books to explore being yourself:

Chrysanthemum

Hooway for Wodney Wat

Tacky the Penguin

Dancing in the Wings

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon

Spoon

Fish is Fish

The Mixed Up Chameleon

Amazing Grace
