1/25/2012 Salt Springs Recreation Area Site 12, Salt Springs, FL

Salt Springs is a federal campground in the Ocala National Forest with paved, full hookup sites. Ours was a back in with a picnic table and fire ring and was just steps from the bath house. The bath house was spotless. There are nature trails, a primitive campground and the  Salt Springs in the park. There is also a marina nearby where you can launch a boat or rent one. There is a small grocery store and some restaurants in the town of Salt Springs. It is a short drive to either Ocala or Palatka for more shopping.

Our AT&T cell service did not work here. Verizon is a little better but very weak. There are two pay phones in the park. The park provides a list of libraries where WIFI is available.

A few of the sites can be reserved on the recreation.gov site for Salt Springs

1/15/2011 St. Joseph Peninsula State Park Site 102 Port St. Joe, FL

Site 102 Shady Pines Campground
Our site at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park was one of the few paved sites in the Shady Pines Campground. We had water and electric, a picnic table and fire pit. The site was just a few steps from the bathhouse and the path to the beach was across the road from our site. The sites are wide with trees and shrubs between most of the sites. The state park is located at the end of St. Joseph Peninsula which is located between Panama City and Apalachicola. The beach is a beautiful white sand beach with huge sand dunes. We saw deer in the park and lots of shore birds in St. Joseph Bay. The campground was not crowded when we were there.  There is a marina with a boat launch in the park. There are also hiking trails. There is another campground in the park which does not have as many trees.

Site 103 Shady Pines Campground
UPDATE: We returned in December, 2011 to site 103 in the Shady Pines Campground. Both campgrounds were almost full over New Year's weekend but most people left after the holiday. Even during the holiday weekend the beach was not crowded.

This is one of our favorite campgrounds. Click favorite to read more about it.

Flamingo Campground, Everglades National Park, Site T35 12/3/09

We stayed in the trailer section of Flamingo Campground. All sites are very long pull through sites with plenty of room on both sides between you and your neighbor. There are no hookups. You can run your generator from 8 am until 8 pm. There is a dump station in the campground with fresh water to fill your holding tank. There are two bath houses with toilets and cold showers. We had a grill at our site. There were plenty of empty sites in early December. Bring everything you need with you. It is a long way to the nearest store in Homestead. Flamingo suffered a lot of damage from Hurricane Wilma in 2005. There are boat rentals and boat tours available at the marina.

2012 UPDATE
We returned to Flamingo in January, 2012. There are now 40 electric sites that are first come, first served. We arrived early in the afternoon and got the last electric site! The trailer section of the campground was almost full.

Ortona South COE Park, LaBelle, FL Sites 40 and 22, 11/29/09

This is by far the nicest Corps of Engineers Park we have been to.  The campground is located at Ortona Lock and Dam on the canal connecting the east and west coast of Florida. Ft. Myers is about an hour drive west and Clewiston is about a 30 minute drive east. All sites have large, paved pads and large gravel picnic area with covered picnic table, fire pit and grill. All sites have water and electric. There is a dump station conveniently located on the way out of the park. The bath houses are spotless and there is one washer and one dryer in the laundry room. Many sites are water front. You can walk across the dam to watch boats go through the lock. If you plan on going to Disney World in your RV, be sure to stay at Ft. Wilderness. We had a premium back in site in the 500 loop. If you travel with a dog be sure to ask for a pet loop. Ft. Wilderness has it all - pool, arcade, playground, clean bath house, laundry room, big dog park. Best of all you are on Disney property and a Disney Resort guest. We loved it!

We really enjoyed our stay at this state park. There are 4 camping loops, all gravel pads with water and electric. There are quite a few large pull through sites. There are 2 bath houses with a laundry at each. The park is beautiful with several walking trails. It is a short walk from the campground to the Silver River. The park is located close to Ocala and the entrance to Silver Springs. It is about a 10 minute drive from the campground to grocery stores, restaurants (some with WIFI), and Wal Mart. Sunset Isle RV Park, Cedar Key, FL Site 19 2/15/09

Sunset Isle's location is perfect for visiting Cedar Key. We really enjoyed our stay here. Some sites are waterfront but even if you are not directly on the water you can still walk out on one of the docks. The name of the campground says it all - you can see a beautiful sunset from the docks. You might also be lucky enough to see some beautiful birds right off the docks. The owners are very nice and helpful. The sites are kind of tight but we had plenty of room for our tow vehicle and to put the slides out. There is a very nice club house with a fireplace. Some nights you might be lucky enough to hear an impromptu jam session. Our site was full hookup with cable. WiFi is available at the office. Cedar Key is a birder's paradise. We enjoyed going out on Captain Doug's Tidewater Tours.
