Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron Class 2

Hi guys, Yep, it's Thursday...very late Thursday...I'll spare you the details of our epic long crazy busy day., including computer issues : /

Let's get right to the fun stuff!! Thanks for being here!

As with last week's class, we made a video slide show. Of course on it's own it only gives an idea of each step, so we included full detailed instructions for you to follow along. In the upper left corner of each photo in the slide show you'll see a title. In the instructions we've titled each step with those same titles so that you'll have an image to match each step. You can view the video once, or twice, or more...pause where you'd like, rewind, fast forward...watch it here on the blog, full screen, or on youtube.

(There is a delay on music editing...Youtube assures us it will be tip top in a bit)

You probably noticed right away that the pages you see here are not from my Strathmore Visual Journal. I did this spread in one of my other books of preference...a moleskine. I have only a few blank pages left in this one and I really wanted to finish it off. The pages are thin in a moleskine so you might want to reinforce them in the same way you would a marble notebook. You can glue in some heavy weight paper like card stock or kraft paper, or even collage layers of regular weight paper and then gesso or paint the pages. In the case of my book, the backs of these pages are already filled up and adorned, so my pages are already sturdy. I just needed to prep them with a coat of gesso.

prep pages. As always, I taped the seam with masking tape.

gesso pages. And then applied a coat of gesso.

light sanding. We received a couple of comments about certain brands of gesso being chalky or gritty, or the brush strokes are heavy. A good solution for this is to give your gessoed pages a light sanding with some fine grit sandpaper. (totally optional)

mix a wash of color. We watered down some pink paint.

paint! We brushed the page with the wash...and don't worry about being neat. This is just a base coat.

lighten w/ gesso. We wanted the center area of the page to be lighter than the edges, so after the pink wash was dry on the page we then watered down some gesso and brushed it over the area we wanted lighter. let dry

gather papers. Get an idea of colors, patterns, and generally just pick some stuff you'd like to see in this spread. Most times we barely have a clue as to where the spread will end up.

draw shape. I often like to put my focal point image within an arch or an oval. In this case I wanted my cake in an arch. So I cut an arch out of some vintage baking book pages. It's great when the ephemera has a link to the imagery. Play around with shapes...find what makes you happy.

cut out. As you can see, there is no science to my drawing and cutting...it's a decidedly primitive affair. Aaron raises an eyebrow quite often over my shoulder at how non precise I am.

adhere. Brush decoupage medium onto your page, lay down shape, press down and rub out wrinkles and bubbles. let dry.

lay papers. Make decisions as to where you want to put your selected papers. It's good to lay them down and move them, and move them, and move them...eventually you'll like what you see.

adhere papers. Adhere papers using your usual decoupage method described above.

lay papers. I usually give my arch a base. In this case I just so happened to have the perfect paper for the job. This aqua chevron print from Heidi Swapp's Sugar Chic collection.

adhere. Adhere papers using your usual decoupage method described above.

paint shapes. I'll deliberately leave blank spots on my page knowing that I'll fill it in with some painted shapes...some doodles of paint. This scallop/cloud shape is a go-to for me. Again, it's about color and vibe...not precision painting.

seal & lighten. Make sure everything is dry. Apply a sealer coat with the medium of your choice. I used matte gel medium by Golden. Let totally dry. As we did last week, I watered down some gesso to make a wash which I then brushed over any "loud" areas...to quiet them down, or mute them.

dab gesso wash. Using a clean, dry paper towel I then dabbed the wash. Again, apply the wash and dab to your own desired effect.

add color outline. Outlining your shapes with paint is a great way to add color and texture...as well as drawing attention to your focal point. I hand painted the shape of the arch using a #10 round brush. For me, there's hand painting and then there's "art journal hand painting". In your Art Journal the rule is to loosen up and have fun. In the place of precision, instead go for bold fluid strokes.

more color! Have fun with it. Do what feels right. Again, since it's "Art Journal hand painting" I didn't worry about one color going right into the last color.

speckle & splatter.  To speckle you'll have to water down the paint in your palette the same way you did with the wash. We use a #6 round brush...load it with the watered down paint...hold the brush a few inches above your page...and just tap the metal end with your index finger. Do it to your desired effect. We love speckling for it's imperfection. It's messy and haphazard and perfect in it's own way.

distress edges. We love to "distress" the edges of our pages with paint. We use colors that contrast well. Darks against lights...lights against darks. This process is very imperfect. Just dip your thumb or finger in paint and rub the very edge of the page.

bottle cap rings. Again, we love the messy, imperfect look that bottle cap paint rings provide. Just apply paint to the rim of the cap and then press down on your page.

cut out stickers. We used our very own stickers from our Scrapbooking and Art Journaling sticker collection. We designed these ones specifically for projects like this...they're left black and white so you can color them yourself. Of course you can use actual photos in place of these...a photo of a real cake...a pic of your own adorable little face ; )...or a black and white drawing that you can cut and paste.

color them. We used a small detail brush, round # 4, and using color washes we just simply filled in the images. You could always use color pencils, watercolor pencils, or your favorite markers.

stick them. Ours were stickers, but we actually didn't use them like stickers. We did not peel off the backing. We adhered them with decoupage medium because we wanted more thickness and opacity so that the background wouldn't show through. Similar to how we backed imagery with watercolor paper last week. After adhering with decoupage medium, wait about a minute for it to dry and then seal it.

water color pencil. Sometimes when I use pink paint I like to accent it with some red watercolor pencils. I just scribble willy nilly along the edges of the pink paint.

add water. "Activate" your watercolor pencil with a brush dipped in water.

dab. Much like with a color wash just dab with a paper towel until you get your desired effect. It's super easy and if you correctly sealed your pages earlier then this step can be very forgiving. Take away or add as much color as you'd like.

draw a bubble. I like the idea of a wonky thought or dialogue bubble. I drew this in pencil on a piece of watercolor paper. You can also use card stock.

paint & speckle. I applied a coat of aqua and I didn't even worry about staying in the lines. When the aqua was dry I then used a speckling effect.

cut & adhere. Cut it out and adhere using decoupage medium. Wait about a minute for it to dry and then seal it.

washi tape time! Washi tape is a great way to add color and pattern wherever your layout is lacking.

add to seam. When working in a moleskine or any bound journal, I always add washi tape to the seam. It's just my personal preference. To me it just looks right.

more tape! Wherever you think you need a pop of color and pattern.

add a word! The word hooray happens to be made from vintage game tiles that I placed on my scanner and printed. Think outside the box!

grab your sharpie pen. I've said it a million times...Sharpie pens are great for Art Journaling. Little bits of black are always welcome in my book and fine line details add another layer of texture.

sharpie pen time! Again, it's not about perfection. Doodling and outlining the shapes and dots around the page is a great way to add more interest and texture.

faux stitching. These are the little details that make your pages special. Use a sharpie pen to create faux stitching around shapes for a sewed on look.

tiny date tag. I think it's great to date pages. I never name a specific day...usually just month and year because I know I'll come back and mess around with a spread.

a cupcake sticker! I thought that this would be a fun pop. It's actually from a sticker and stationery collection that we designed and were sold at Michaels craft stores. I layered it on top of a paper punch and a gold foil sticker.

hand written bits. Write some words and phrases on card stock or water color paper, cut out, and adhere using your usual decoupage method.

journal spot. Now is when you add your "deep thoughts" to your thought or dialogue bubble...much like my love of french fries, chihuahuas, and coconut ice pops!

Hooray! Ok, this spread was busier and messier than last week's. And I thinks it's totally fitting that it's in MY journal.

If you have any questions please leave a comment. We are so excited to see what you guys take away from this class. We'd love to see and hear about your art journaling, so please make sure to link your blog post back to this post so we can all visit and cheer each other on. Submit your link at the end of this post and please grab the below blog badge! We hope you enjoyed this week's class. We will be back next Thursday (much earlier in the day). Happy Art Journaling!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday lovies!

So how was your week? Hopefully a great one! The Springtime weather has been playing peek-a-boo with us here on the Jersey Shore. Some lovely sunshine mixed with chilly breezes requiring extra blankets at night. I'm not going to complain a bit, the last thing I want is for Mother Nature to pull one of those Spring for a week straight to Summer deals...like last year.

How about these darrrling candy colored wedges from Asos? Ohh I just love love love them! And nooooway could I choose between the pink or aqua! They are both perfect! Totally an everyday shoe for me!

Ok, so I first saw this beauty about a month or so ago in a preview email from IKEA. I seriously remember a flutter in my heart and my eyeballs widening! It's like a dream piece for the studio! I neeeeed it!!! I've been waiting and waiting for it to hit stores and there are rumors of it showing up in an OHIO location recently! It was set to be in stores in April...not sure if that means all locations. I promise it will be mine! :)

When I was little my dad had a desk chair in his office that looked so so similar to this, it had a lower back but same overall style and "feet". Of course it was not some designer model or even leather...but it was so fun to sit and spin it..while watching Scooby Doo. This here is an Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair. Read a bit of the history here. Of course I could never afford the real thing, but as with every other coveted classic there are knocks offs and trickle downs for us regular folk.
This is so so adorbs isn't it? I just think it is so whimsical! Nature meets candy! It comes in a few colors but this teal/aqua color screams my name!

Alright, I in no way feel bad about admitting that I am a total sucker for cute packaging. Look at these cute lil bottles! That raffia bow and cork top! I want all three of these! May even wear them all at the same time! They are by Megan Miller, and I found them at Anthro! Ohhh that gold one!

What are you coveting? Show me! Show me! :)

I just wanted to share this happy little pic with you! Aaron and I are so so thrilled to have shipped batches of our instagram inspired pieces all across the country to their cheery new homes. Artists are their own worst critics and all too often you'll be the least impressed by your own work. Kinda the opposite of "a face only a mother could love" ya know? But so far, no matter how many we make, wrap, and pack up...we never tire of looking at these Instagram paintings. The subject matter, the colors...we just love them as if they weren't our own. Thanks bunches to all you sweetpeas who took one...(or two or three) home!

Alrighty kids...let the weekend begin!!

early morning Sunshine

Hey friends!

Happy Wednesday! We are half way there! ;)
So...my parents whom I haven't seen in about a year were in town for a visit the past two days. They stayed over last night...on a blow up mattress in the livingroom. The last time they were in this room it was a familiar mix of tans, reds, and navy blue. I know waking up here today must have been a bit of a "Where am I ?" situation. With candy colored striped walls, tiny pianos, and pink bunnies spying on them. My mom did comment that it was nice to see the house living a new life. My parents moved way upstate N.Y. and are building a log cabin. I've been hearing them talk about "log cabin kits" for about 30 yrs! They are finally living out that dream. I'm happy for them. Not sure when we'd be taking that 5+ hr drive to visit their neck of the woods, but I'm sure we'll make it a sibling road trip.

They hit the road pretty darn early...before we even got out of bed. It's a super sunshiney day so they should have a pretty nice drive. Speaking of sunshine...the livingroom was aglow this morning so I took a few pics for ya! Again, we are still chipping away and moving things around. Feeling things out. :)

Yes...more stripes! This aqua and cream striped wall mirrors the pink and cream stripes I shared with you the other day. It's fun to glance from right to left (while sitting in our aqua nook) seeing the room with an aqua backdrop...then switching to pink. It's so interesting to see how different items in the room pop with a turn of the head and change of background :)

A favorite Springtime treasure.

These incredibly darling altered prize ribbons were a gift from a super talented friend a few yrs ago. She was soooo ahead of her time! I adore these so so much! The vintage trims, glitter, and smile inducing centers featuring vintage dolls, millinery flowers, and ephemera! They just make my heart so so happy!

So hard to pick a favorite isn't it? They are just magical!

We have one wall left to figure out here in the livingroom. We are pretty sure it will be a shade of mocha. It's the largest wall...so it will be a challenge. We'll be keeping it simple but we do have a few ideas swirling around.

Ohh!... I really want to send a Big Happy Blogiversary to my sweet blogland friend annnnd Everyday is a Holiday sponsor, Miss Amanda of Cupcakes & Corsets! Amanda is not only a total sweetie..but oh my gosh! So so talented! You must check out her cookies! They are amazing!! And seriously delicious! She is having a big giveaway to celebrate 4 years of blogging! Hooray!! Pop over and say hi...and enter to win! Tell her Jenny Holiday sentcha! ;)

Okie Doke kids... be back soon!

A couple more classic kitchen cut outs

Hi guys!

I'm so so excited to share our newest JUMBO diecuts with you!! I have had this super fun vintage vanilla extract bottle sketched on napkins and tiny bits of paper for years! I cannot tell you how happy I am to actually have the "real life" version hanging on our wall! Of course we had to include "Charlotte" in the company logo!.... teeny tiny polka dots ...pastel frosted cupcakes, ... And I love the pop of the red cap...like a cherry on top. :)

We really have to thank you all so so much for all of the incredible feedback on our diecuts! We are so excited to see them hanging in YOUR homes! So please please send us some photos! We'd LOVE to see your vintage kitchens and bakery inspired vignettes! :)

They're here! They're here!

Hey kids!
Just want to thank you guys so so much for all of the super sweet words here on the blog and over on facebook about the new Jumbo diecuts! So happy you like them! We are really just so excited about them. We spent most of today finishing up photographing and listing the first batch in the shop. It is quite hard to pick a favorite. At first I thought the chocolate layer cake was it...gosh, then when we hung the aqua mixer, my face squinched up, and my heart raced a bit.. So for today...it's the mixer. Tomorrow may be the cherry topped cupcakes on a plate. (still to be photographed)

We have 4 in the shop and hope to have 4 more listed tomorrow. Including a BIG Charlotte doll head, and a Chocolate Rabbit! :)

If you'd like one of your own pop over and check them out! They are made to order and will ship in about 1-2 weeks. (unless we get mega orders...which wouldn't be a bad thing.)

Hope you guys have a GREAT weekend!!

ooh oooh....before I go...The Walking Dead comes back tomorrow night!!! YAAAAAY!!

A girl can dream...

Like I said a million times...the kitchen is the heart and soul of a home. And I promise that you'll get re-acquainted with that idea if you ever move into a new place. Me and Aaron just moved and it was just so utterly essential to get the kitchen in living/working order before even getting all of our boxes over to the new place. We've already had all of our bigger discussions around the table, celebrated a birthday, ate a holiday meal...and now we're trying our best to stock the cupboards with our New Year's resolution diet foods.

Today I took some pics in the new kitchen...just a couple sneak peeks of our new Jumbo solid wood cutouts of sweets. They're on half inch thick wood, super sturdy, heirloom quality... And they are BIG. Great pieces of home decor. Pictured here is our chocolate cupcake and our three layer cake. But these are the mere tippy tops of the iceberg. We've got dozens in progress...including a slice of cake, a large Charlotte doll head, tray of cupcakes, ice cream cone, chocolate bunny, pink paper mache rabbit, and a couple versions of vintage stand mixers...including a fantastic RED one...which peeps have been requesting left and right. The mixers are so fabulous...very big statement pieces for the home...or business for that matter. These will be available very soon. And what we're really thrilled about is that our carpenter is my little brother Walt. He's been working away at making his workshop a visually awesome space...he really had in his mind that his shop would be for tinkering mostly with engines and various greasy objects...but we instantly invaded his space with saws and the requisite sawdust. He's more than thrilled to be our woodcutting machine...but he's gonna need a new shop-vac for all the dust.

We hope to have most of the collection photographed and listed in the shop this weekend! So stay tuned! And for up to the minute news and SALES like us on facebook! :)

Ok, well being that I'm in a kitchen state of mind...and vintage/retro is the only way I go...I wanted to feature some amazing "new vintage" appliances from SMEG! For many years I've had tear sheets of these beauties pinned to my cork board. The colors are so dreamy and creamy...the streamlined/chunky designs are right out of my fantasy sketchbooks. I'm so in love with British kitchens...and that's where I spied SMEG fridges and stoves most often. Buying all those import magazines used to be so expensive but Pinterest certainly solved that financial obstacle. You can get these kitchen cuties on-line here. It's a super fab source for all your SMEG needs. Customer reviews for all of these pieces are stellar. My dream kitchen will certainly come to fruition one day...and there will be SMEG appliances for sure. I love the chunky hinged door handle especially. Heck, for years I've been wanting one of their refrigerators for our bedroom! We wouldn't plug it in...just use it as a dresser for sweaters and other warm clothes. A girl can dream...can't she?

Alright, just thought I'd check in from my corner of the kitchen. I'll be back really soon with more pics and links for shop listings of our brand new solid wood cutouts.

Sweet Shop Ornament tutorial

Is it weird that I'm such a HUGE fan of our new full-color sticker sheets? And I swear, this isn't one of those tootin' my own horn moments...I honestly love these sticker sheets! They are exactly what I'd hope to find in the fantasy scrapbooking/art journal shop of my dreams. I cannot wait to make more! We have endless ideas and mock-ups for future sheets...the only issue is finding the time! One thing that I promise to do is always compliment any forthcoming creative elements of ours with tutorials here on the blog...just some simple examples of how to put this good stuff to good use.
We're still at work on our very own hand painted patterned paper packs...so for now this little project will make use of some of your own favorite patterned papers for the backgrounds. These are simple ornaments mounted on wooden discs that we purchased at Michaels...but you can probably find similar ones at A.C. Moore, Jo Ann Fabrics, or any store like these. Look for wood, mdf, chipboard, whatever you like really. Ours measure approximately 4 inches across...and ours were CHEAP! They came in a multi-pack with all different shapes and sizes and the whole pack was like 5 bucks!

What you will need:

- Everyday is a Holiday full-color sticker sheets!!
-scissors, pencil, artist paint brush
-wood, mdf, or chipboard discs in shape of your choice,
approx. 4" across.
- patterned papers for your backgrounds
-Decou-page by DecoArt. You can also use matte finish Mod Podge or clear gel medium
- heavy duty glue like E6000 or a hot glue gun if you prefer.
-colored glitters of your choice. (We used Martha's tinsel glitter in florentine gold, feldspar, and kunzite.)
-ultra fine clear glitter
-bakery twine or pretty string or ribbon of your choice
-ric rac or ribbon to hang them with

LinkStep 1. Trace the shapes of your ornaments onto your background papers and cut out paper backgrounds. Also, cut out the stickers of your choice, eye-up your designs and match the stickers with their respective backgrounds.

Step 2. Adhere your backgrounds. We used Decou-page by DecoArt...but again, you can use matte finish Mod Podge or gel medium. With a paint brush apply a thin even coat to the disc, lay corresponding paper on it and gently press down...then gently smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles with a clean, dry paper towel. Let dry. You do not need to apply a top coat of the Decou-page or Mod Podge. We will be doing this later on. ( hint: most people have a tendency to brush a coat of Mod Podge over top of the paper they just glued down...doing this will always result in lots of wrinkles and bubbles. When applying a topcoat it is essential to let the paper that you've just glued down to fully set-up and dry. You'll know it is dry when it is no longer cool to the touch.)

Step 3. Once the backgrounds that you've glued down are fully set-up and dried, peel backs off of your stickers and apply them to their corresponding ornaments. Then, apply a thin even coat of Decou-page medium (or Mod Podge, or gel medium) over the entire front of the ornament...then dust the entire front with a coat of ultra fine clear glitter...let dry and shake off excess glitter. Next, apply a thin even coat of Decou-page medium (or Mod Podge, or gel medium) to the outside edge of the ornament and dust with an even coat of colored glitter (tip: using a glitter tray or paper plate, roll/press edges in colored glitter.)...let dry, shake off excess.

Step 4. Tie bows...we used classic bakery twine because we just love the stuff...you can find small rolls of it in all sorts of colorways at Michaels, A.C. Moore, or the crafty shop of your choice. Also, you can use ribbon or whatever you like instead. Just tie simple bows and using your more heavy duty adhesive or glue gun, attach the bows to the top-center of each ornament.
Next, make a loop of ric rac or ribbon to hang your ornament...attach to the back using your heavy duty adhesive or glue gun. To finish it off and make the backs prettier, we often used a 2" paper punch to punch out a circle of patterned or colored paper, and then we decoupage the paper circle right over the cut ends of the ribbon loop thats on back...it looks good and reinforces the loop hanger at the same time.

Taa Daaah! You've got a gorgeous, glittery set of Cupcake & Cake ornaments!...And you only used a few of your Everyday is a Holiday stickers!...You can make more...do a mixer ornament...or find a long thin base and make an ornie using one of the Retro Baking Gals! The format is no big deal...that's the easy part. But now you've got a simple idea of how to use your stickers in a really fun way...just follow the same steps, use the same methods, and you can't go wrong. We'd love for you to share what you've done with us! We can't wait to see your projects! Email us photos!
