The Twelve Symbols of Christmas: {Christmas} Advent Countdown

A couple of years ago I helped the 16 and 17 year old girls
put together the Twelve Symbols of Christmas for a special family in our congregation.
It was a sweet spin on the Twelve Days of Christmas.

We brainstormed the symbols together and then shopped at Target
for physical representations of each symbol.

We really lucked out in finding inexpensive ornaments and other festive items
for our special gift.
However, we had a really hard time finding a good representation of the Nativity.

So I made one!

And we framed it,
and wrapped it along with the rest of the symbols and left the secret gift
on our special family's doorstep with the instructions to open one gift each night.
The Star
A heavenly sign of a prophecy long, long ago - The shining hope of mankind.

The Evergreen Tree
The second color of Christmas shows everlasting light and life. The needles point up to heaven.

The Bell
Rings out to guide lost sheep back to the fold, signifying that all are precious in His eyes.

The Candle
A mirror of starlight, reflecting our thanks for the star of Bethlehem.

The Bow
Tied as we should all be tied together in bonds of goodwill forever.

The Candy Cane
Represents the shape of the shepherd's crook, used to bring lost lambs back to the fold.

The Wreath
A symbol of the never ending eternal value of love… having no end.

Red Ornament
The first color of Christmas, symbolizing the Savior's sacrifice for all.

The Gift
God sent His Son – the greatest gift of all.

The Poinsettia
A Mexican legend tells of a little boy who had nothing to give the baby Jesus. As he prayed, a flower grew at his feet. He quickly picked it and gave it to Jesus.

The Angel
Announced the birth of our Savior.

The Nativity
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Attached to each small gift was a numbered envelope and inside was a
little explanation of the precious Christmas symbol.

You can get your 8x10 print of the nativity and the list of all the symbols with their
explanations right HERE!!!!!

And I think it would be so awesome to go entirely handmade with this
and make something to represent each symbol.

Free Printable: {STACHING} Through the Snow Chalkboard Print

You know I love mustaches, so when I saw this saying on an ornament,
I had to make a printable to hang up in my home.
Because I appreciate all my wonderful readers, I'm sharing it with you!

First I made one with a Santa hat that wasn't "chalkified" and I liked it.
You can download it HERE!!!!!

Then I tried "chalkifying" the hat and I liked it even more.

Halloween Fun: Let's BOO!

For the Pinterest Party one of the crafts I had for the ladies to make
was a BOO'd gift so that they could start the tradition
with their friends and neighbors.

I made my own printable this year because - those I love the color versions -
I wanted a black & white version that easy for the next person to copy
and pass on so that they were more likely to keep the fun going.

I also made this paper cone and filled it up with candy
to add to the cuteness and ease.
It's a 12x12 piece of sparkly scrapbook paper that I got at Joann.
I rolled it and hot glued the edges to keep it secure.

I also made a cute little hanging door tag for the BOO'd family
to hang on their door, so that other prospective BOO'ers know
that they've already joined in the fun.

I included a copy of the BOO'd sign and the instructions
so that the recipients can easily make a copy and pass it on
to the next lucky ducks.
I rolled it up and secured it with this cool sticky back trim
that I got from Dollar Bins at Joann.

So, get out there and spread some Halloween cheer!!!!
If you want your own copy of BOO'd printables, they are at the end of the post.

You can download the printable HERE!!!!

Pure Deliciousness: Zucchini Brownies

 These are seriously delicious.
Like knock your socks off amazing.
I might be biased, but I love them.
My friend Kara Noel said they are more like a cake than
a brownie, you say tomato, I say tomato :)

Whatever they are, they are fabulous
and you'll be begging for more.
It's best to make these when you have somewhere
to take them, so you don't eat the entire pan by yourself.

In addition it's a much better alternative to getting rid
of your overabundance of garden zucchini than dumping
them on your neighbor's doorstep - leave these instead!

Plus, if you use Greek yogurt instead of oil, they are practically health food.
Well, that is until you frost them.
You don't have to frost them,
but that's what my mom does, so it must be right.

Don't forget the milk!

This is my mom's chocolate frosting recipe.
She doesn't deal in absolutes when it comes to frosting,
so play around with the amounts until you're happy with the
consistency and flavor.

Kyla's Favorite Free Fonts: {Part One}

I've wanted to write this post for FOREVER!
But I knew the work that would be involved in writing
and researching such a post, so I kept putting it off.
But there have been so many questions about the fonts
that I use on my printables that I decided to share
my favorite FREE fonts in a series of posts.

There are so many fonts I love,
and as a digital design/scrapbook lover,
I've collected quite a few over the years.
It was hard to narrow it down,
but I'm starting with fifteen free fonts that I love using.

What are your favorite free fonts?
I'm always looking to add to my collection.
Let's see if you can suggest one I don't already have :)

Back To School: Are You Ready?

I can't believe that next week we're back to school!
Where did the time go?
Our Summer Bucket List is almost complete,
and new school shoes have been purchased.
However, I'm not sure I'm ready to be back
on someone else's sche

I figured instead of waiting until last minute,
I'd start shopping for the contents of my

It's not too late!
You can make your teacher one too!

our classes First Day of School Survival Kits
when I was teaching, so it's fun to be on the other
side and make something for JT's teacher.

You can find the instructions and printables for the Survival Kit

Summer Recipe: Zucchini Casserole

When I went to visit my parents last summer they had quite the garden going.
One of the things that grows in abundance is zucchini.
I always wondered what one did with a plethora of  zucchini,
besides leave it in unlocked cars during church.
Then one night my mom whipped up this delicious casserole
and I was fully impressed with the power of the zucchini.

I left last summer with full intentions of making this yummy meal
for my family, but I got home and with no zucchinireadily available
- and I am definitely not paying for something that neighbor tries to pawn off on neighbor in Utah -
I forgot about it.

Until -
We were visiting this summer and the garden was in full bloom
and my mom whipped another fabulous zucchini casserole.
So, I got the recipe and I made it when I got home.
Holla!

And, you'll be happy to know that I did not pay for my zucchini.
I sent out a plea to the ladies at church via our Yahoo Group
and my request was answered by my sweet friend Allison.

The one thing I did differently than my mom's recipe is to use
Chobani Greek Yogurt instead of sour cream.
I'm not a sour cream fan anyway, so figured this was the perfect opportunity
to try out this tip I'd seen on the Chobani website.

I've had this Pampered Chef mixing bowl for going on 12 years
and I totally adore it.
Here's my diced zucchini. Skin and all.

If you're wondering what size zucchini you'll need to get 6 cups,
here's what was leftover from the beast of a zucchini up above after I chopped it up.

Bake it til it's brown and the zucchini is tender.
Yum!

Now, if you abhor all things "cream of", I'm sorry.
Most of my favorite family recipes contain something from the "cream of" family,
so I can't help you there.
But I'm sure you have a replacement trick up your sleeve that you could try.

So, now maybe you can leave a nice hot meal on your
neighbor's porch instead of a bag of zucchini . . . you know who you are . . .

Saturday was my 11th anniversary,
so in honor of my wedding colors,
I did a little purple and white this week.
